ACDP welcomes President’s signing into law of Prevention and Combating of Trafficking in Persons Bill

· calls for speedy finalization of regulations and implementation of Act

· applauds those NGO’s dealing with human trafficking

ACDP MP and member of Parliament’s Justice Portfolio Committee Steve Swart today welcomed the recent signing into law of the comprehensive Prevention and Combating of Trafficking in Persons Bill. Swart, who, together with other members of the committee, worked tirelessly on the “Human Trafficking Bill”, believes this is a significant step in the right direction to eradicate this scourge.

“The Act is a significant step in the right direction as it comprehensively deals with the scourge of human trafficking. However, any law is only as effective as its implementation. We need to have the regulations finalised as soon as possible to enable its effective implementation.

Additionally, police units will need training in the new procedures, inclusive of response, forensic procedures, and victims’ rights and attitudes, especially in rural areas, where many other crimes, especially against women, go unreported.

“This law means we can finally stand up and say we are doing something to comprehensively address this modern form of slavery. This is an issue that is interlaced with child abuse and domestic violence, as well as poverty. We commend the many NGO’s that are involved in assisting victims of human trafficking. At last they will have a comprehensive law to assist them and the police in their endeavours to eradicate this evil.”
