Education must be good to create jobs says ACDP

“Free education is not enough to end unemployment in South Africa,“ said Gauteng leader of the ACDP Dr Lydia Meshoe (MPL) today. “While the ACDP agrees with SADTU that South African education should be free, we also believe that it should be world-class.”

“Pass-rates of 30 and 40% are not enough to create employable school-leavers – 50% should be the minimum. Also, the Department of Education needs to tackle the high drop-out rate after Grade 10, and we need many more passes in real mathematics and science. Employers and tertiary institutions are seldom impressed by an applicant’s “A” in Life Orientation when he or she has scraped through all the other subjects, even if these include Mathematical Literacy.
