Legalizing prostitution did not help Germany says ACDP

“Legalizing prostitution did not help Germany,” said the National President of the ACDP’s Women of Destiny Dr Lydia Meshoe (MPL) today. She was responding to President’s Zuma’s recent comments about decriminalization of prostitution remaining on the agenda of the SA Law Reform Commission.

“In Germany, the legalization of prostitution has encouraged trafficking of poor women from nearby Eastern Europe. There is no reason to believe that making prostitution legal in South Africa would not also encourage human trafficking both within the country and from our poorer neighbours.”

“The ACDP Women of Destiny disagrees with the ANC Women’s League and the Commission for Gender Equality who have stated that they want the selling of sex to be made legal in our country. We believe that the women of South Africa deserve better – selling one’s body can never be considered decent work.”

“Also, one-fifth of the women of child-bearing age in our country are HIV-positive and our families are already in serious trouble with 9 million children living in fatherless homes. As South Africans we need to create real jobs and to rebuild our families.”
