UNIVERSITY CAMPUSES

Rev. KRJ Meshoe MP     25 February 2016

The ACDP strongly condemns the ongoing violence and destruction of property during protests and strikes in our country, particularly at university campuses.  While we understand and support the legitimate demands of students such as free education and proper accomodation, we will never support the use of violence to highlight demands and settle disputes.

It is disgraceful for university students to throw sewage in buildings as happened at the University of Cape Town earlier this week. Sad to say, the Chemical Engineering Building is one of several that were targeted by the “poo” brigade. These are individuals who should be adding value to the university intelligentsia, but who have chosen rather to undermine their own dignity and the dignity of others.

The ACDP further strongly condemns the behaviour of student protesters who disrupted a student prayer gathering at the University of Freestate. Authorities must not allow hooligans masquerading as students to turn legitimate concerns of students into a rebellion that even denies Christian students their constitutional right to pray and worship freely.

We call on government, particularly the Minister of Intelligence, to get their operatives to do their work, so that South Africa does not descend further into anarchy.

We also call on Churches to support prayer gatherings for peace at different campuses across the country, and for peace-loving South Africans of all races to stand together and expose and isolate the enemies of peace in our land.
