Is the ACDP anti-Constitution?
The ACDP is fully supportive of a constitutional democracy, as long as the laws or constitutional provisions passed by such a dispensation do not conflict with what we would refer to as the transcendent law of God.
Why did the ACDP vote against the Constitution?
Politically we were unable to persuade the Constitutional Assembly that certain provisions contained in the Bill of rights were contrary to our Christian Democratic values, and therefore exercised our political choice in not voting for the Constitution.
Why should Christians get involved in politics?
As Christians we are called to be salt and light – salting
everything with the presence of God and shining the light of Christ
into every dark corner. This includes politics where significant decisions
affecting the quality of life of every person are made.
What does noted author and psychologist Dr James Dobson have
to say on this issue?
“All it takes for evil to flourish is for good men to
do nothing”. Politics is a classic example where in recent
times, the absence of men committed to Godly principles has really
allowed evil to flourish.
What Christian politicians can you name?
William Wilberforce, a British MP, who campaigned for years in order
to end slavery in response to his Godly belief in the equality of
man.
Aren’t there Christians in every political party?
That is true but unfortunately, when it comes to voting for legislation,
you can’t tell a Christian MP in a party from any other MP
in a party – party discipline requires them to vote as one
irrespective of personal beliefs. (Where were these Christians when
abortion was legalised?)
Is the ACDP for Christians only?
Not at all. We believe that the Godly principles for which we
stand are common to the majority of South Africans irrespective
of religious belief.
Won’t a vote for the ACDP split the opposition vote?
This claim is only ever made by the official opposition party, often
forgetting that when they were a small party, the only way they
grew was by “splitting the opposition vote”. The ACDP
will never grow unless people vote for our principles rather than
voting for another party out of fear.
Isn’t the ACDP a white party?
Not at all. Look at our parliamentarians and ask which party is
more representative of all racial groups than us.
Isn’t the ACDP a black party?
Not at all. See the answer above. A study by the Human Sciences
Research Council earlier in 2000 showed the demographics of our
support to be 50% black, 18% white & coloured and 12% Asian.
