Media release: CPIX stats impact should be expedited

The impact of the miscalculation in consumer inflation figures should be expedited so that the necessary adjustments can be made.

"The impact of these figures on the economy is dramatic and the consequences of such a mistake are huge. The CPIX affects wage negotiations, financial forecasts, interest rates and contracts and should be doubly checked and controlled to make sure an error of such great magnitude does not occur," said African Christian Democratic Party MP Adriaan Blaas.

"The mistake in the statistics also impacts negatively on confidence in our economy and our country's official statistics. South Africa's system of statistics should have a high level of legitimacy and should be properly scrutinised," Blaas said.
