Political coalitions not always beneficial to democracy

Political coalitions compromise the principle of voter accountability and
are often not forged in the interests of the people, said African Christian
Democratic Party chief whip Louis Green at the EISA Roundtable Meeting on
South African Political Party Coalitions on Thursday.

"Preferring responsible governance rather than party-political interests,
the ACDP believes that the importance of democratic representation and
stable administration need to be taken into account when forming
coalitions," Green said.

"Our experience has shown that partnerships are not necessarily produced by
parties seeking collaboration on issues of mutual concern.

"In KwaZulu-Natal for instance after the recent floor-crossing period, both
the ANC and IFP sought to form a coalition to gain the majority in the
province. The ACDP declined, requesting that both parties instead work to
resolve their differences in the best interests of the province.

"When it comes to serving the interests of its constituency, the ACDP
refuses to compromise its principles," Green said.
