ACDP President Voices Disapproval at NNP/DP debacle
Rev Kenneth Meshoe MP ACDP President
Thursday, 1 November 2001
In a statement today, African Christian Democratic Party President Reverend Kenneth Meshoe said, The ACDP wishes to voice its displeasure and disapproval of the uncertainty and confusion created by the infighting and split in the Democratic Alliance. There seems to be no regard for the truth and respect for others, as some politicians break their promises and betray the trust of those who voted for them.
Rev Meshoe said that the ACDP equally deplores the fact that business in the Western Cape Legislature has been indefinitely suspended at a high cost to the taxpayers and voters in this province. He said, This is irresponsible, especially as it comes from a party that has much to say about efficiency and good governance.
The ACDP chose not to exploit this situation, said Rev Meshoe, but rather to offer its services as mediators should the need arise. We further respect the right of all persons to align themselves, and to seek a political home wherever they wish in the multi-party democracy envisaged by the constitution, which also allows for a process of co-operative governance and consensus-seeking, he said.
In view of the fact that the ACDP has expounded Christian Democratic principles since its inception, Rev Meshoe said that he and his party would be concerned should a name change, incorporating the words Christian Democratic be considered by the NNP, as this would undoubtedly confuse the voters.
