Slow international reaction to DRC shameful

The following statement was given by ACDP MP Adv Zwelethu (Mighty) Madasa in Parliament on 20 May:

We in the ACDP are extremely unhappy about the inaction or slowness of pace on the part of international community in the face of the slaughter of innocent people in the Eastern part of the DRC. These gruesome killings are happening in the same region where millions were killed during the Burundi and Rwanda genocide.

Ironically these killings are taking place simultaneously with the continued looting and raping of the DRC minerals by the elements of the same international community that is turning a blind eye to these murders.

Like in Angola in the past, it seems that peace in the DRC may result in losses in profits from the cheap and secretive mining done by foreign companies with the collusion of some corrupt and greedy African leaders and captains of industry who are profiting on the back of the poor masses. The massage is clear African lives are cheap whilst her soil is rich in minerals.

The continued killings in the DRC are once more an example of the glaring weaknesses of he multilateral forums especially when it pertains to African problems. The African Union has a huge responsibility to speed up the working of the peace and security commission to prevent losses of lives in future.

These killings are another reminder that reliance on external help to solve African problems is not going to help.
