Media Statement: Black empowerment should benefit currently disadvantaged
African Christian Democratic Party MP (NCOP) Kent Durr
5 June 2003
Black empowerment and affirmative action as currently applied by the government is not fairly applied, as it enriches the lives of only a select few.
The ACDP advocates changing the focus from previously disadvantaged to currently disadvantaged individuals, which would alter the focus from the current racially discriminatory nature of affirmative action. Many black empowerment programmes designed to uplift the majority of poor South Africans merely result in the enrichment of a few.
The ACDP also recommends the creation of an apartheid restitution fund to focus upon the social redress of the apartheid system, to benefit those who are truly disadvantaged.
A timeline and sunset clause should be imposed on the whole process to ensure that the affirmative action runs a natural course and is not applied indefinitely.
