ACDP Leader calls on Government to contest ruling which allows for liquor to be sold at strip clubs

Dr. Kenneth Meshoe MP- ACDP

Thursday, 20 June 2002

In the following Notice of Motion to Parliament today Dr. Kenneth Meshoe leader of the African Christian Democratic Party called on government to contest the recent court ruling allowing liquor to be sold at strip clubs:

Draft Resolution (K R Meshoe) That the House:

1. Notes with disapproval that strip clubs in South Africa are now legal.
2. Further notes that liquor laws declaring stripping to be an offence if it occurs in places where alcohol is sold have been struck down by the Johannesburg Court and declared unconstitutional;
3. Notes that the successful challenge legalising strip clubs was lodged by Andrew Phillips, owner of a strip bar disgustingly named: “Titty Twister” and the Ranch, a brothel that was placed under curatorship by the Asset Forfeiture Unit;
4. Further notes the applicant’s hope that this decision will lead to the legalising of prostitution;
5. Reminds the South African public that most parties in this House except the ACDP voted for the South African constitution, knowing it would allow for the legalisation of pornography and prostitution.

Therefore:

1. Calls on the people of South Africa to call for an explanation from the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Minister of Trade and Industry and the Minister of Safety and Security, who chose not to oppose the application.
2. Further calls on Government to contest this ruling, which must still be ratified by the Constitutional Court before Section 160(d)(i) and (ii) of the Liquor Act can be struck from the status books.
