An Alternative to LoveLife
Wednesday, 14 August 2002
Dear Community Churches and NGOs
I am writing this letter in response to numerous requests as to what we should be doing in the face of the current situation and information we have released around the Lovelife campaign.
I encourage you to urgently network within your communities and form viable alternatives to Lovelife.
Here are some suggestions, which could be helpful in triggering thoughts around an effective and relevant response:
A toll free 24 hour help line with an email and/or postal address for parents and teens to access help regarding sexuality and HIV/Aids is urgently needed.
A national brand name under which all family friendly/ Christian organisations can work, such as Yes to Life to replace love life in peoples minds would be helpful.
Advertising and marketing of this brandname and its help line and counselling facilities could be promoted by Christian leaders and celebrities (many of whom have been misled by Lovelife to date).
Establishment of youth centres with sports facilities and skills training programmes etc.
Youth friendly desks at clinics to be manned by Christian family friendly counsellors.
Approach organisations like Focus on the Family, Crossroads etc. re: equipping and empowering this initiative with training and materials.
Insist on No Apologies (Focus on the Family), Crossroads or other reliable Christian material in the Lifeskills classes in your schools.
Impliment these same programmes in youth groups at your church.
Lovelife are also in schools via their sports programmes such as the Lovelife games and on television in the form of survival shows such as Scamto Ground Breakers to capture the youths attention and trust, and soften parents, schools and churches, in order to propagate erroneous solutions to very real problems. Unfortunately Lovelife is there because we are not.
A secular humanistic government cannot fund this initiative if it is to be unpolluted by secular thinking. Obviously the ACDP will continue to harass and lobby for public funds to be placed in responsible hands as opposed to organisations like PPASA and Lovelife, but it is obvious that a secular government would have confidence in a secular organisation.
If you would like more information or for me as a MP and Health and Education Portfolio Committee member to address your organisation or community forum on the facts please contact me through media@acdp.co.za
Thank you for your concern and willingness to be part of the solution. I pray God will bless you abundantly in your endeavours, that His hand will be upon you, that He will increase your territory and keep you from harm.
Sincerely in Jesus name
