ACDP Calls on government to accept MRC findings on HIV/Aids
Rhoda Southgate MP ACDP
Thursday, 18 October 2001
Today in Parliament Rhoda Southgate MP for the African Christian Democratic Party handed in the following written Notice of Motion:
I will move on behalf of the ACDP:
That the house:-
Notes with great alarm the report by the Medical Research Council indicating that HIV/Aids is the single biggest killer of South Africans.
Notes that HIV/Aids accounts for a quarter of all deaths in South Africa.
That by the year 2010 the pandemic would have taken the lives of about six million South Africans.
Calls on government not to use taxpayers money to dispute the statistics but rather accept the statistics released as fact and use this information for future planning on how this pandemic can be effectively addressed
That government re-examine its present policy position and declare HIV/Aids a notifiable disease.
Asks can government afford to continually deny that HIV causes Aids and run the risk of losing the lives of millions of South Africans, which this government purports to have fought for freedom?
