ACDP calls for the Death Penalty for Moniques Killers
Rhoda Southgate MP ACDP
Friday, 06 September 2002
African Christian Democratic Party MP Mrs Rhoda Southgate today expressed shock and horror at the shooting of physically disabled 16-year-old Monique Valentine who was brutally shot during a hijacking of an Oasis school bus on Tuesday morning, and subsequently died yesterday.
Mrs Southgate extended her condolences to Moniques parents, Joseph and Anita Valentine and their family this morning and said that she prayed for Gods blessing, peace and comfort to be with the Valentine family and friends at this sad time.
Mrs Southgate urged the Western Cape police to leave no stone unturned as they hunt down Moniques killers. She said, The children of South Africa are valuable and precious and depend on us for their protection. It is Governments duty to ensure the perpetrators of this crime be brought to justice and be made an example of in order to dissuade future crime of this nature. As the ACDP we once again call upon the South African government to reinstate the death penalty. The men who shot and killed Monique Valentine did not respect her right to life, government and our courts should therefore also not respect their right to life.
