ACDP welcomes Mayor's decision to postpone possible name change for Pretoria.

- Clr. Pieter de Necker

The African Christian Democratic Party welcomes the announcement by the Executive Mayor of Tshwane to postpone the possible name change of Pretoria.

Although the Mayor is only indefinitely postponing the possible name change, the ACDP still believe that it would be a foolish thing to do to change the Capital's name. History and hurts of the past can not be undone with by merely changing the name of an entity. Although Pretoria was known as the bastion of apartheid, it now serves as a testimony of reconciliation. It is the New Pretoria in a New South Africa.

It is clear from the responses by many Pretorians that they are not in favour of a name change. From the Mayor's statement it is clear that he is only suspending the time-frames for public participation, however the public of Pretoria has already indicate their definite objection to a new name.

The ACDP want to urge the mayor not only to suspend the time-frames, but to suspend the whole idea. It is time for the ANC to stop with their petty politics and to start deliver what they have promised the electorate. A name change for Pretoria will not put bread on the table of the hungry, roofs over the heads of the homeless or will care for those suffering with HIV/AIDS.
