Gov: enough awareness, more solutions!

Cheryllyn Dudley MP

The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) welcomes the fact that government is acknowledging the gravity of the problem of abuse amongst women and children in South Africa.

However, the ACDP calls on government to urgently implement solutions and to stop hiding behind ribbons and rhetoric. This comes amid the beginning of the 16 days of activism.

“South Africans, on the ground, are fully aware of the abuse. It’s time for government to move beyond trying to create awareness - it needs to begin solving the problem.” said Cheryllyn Dudley, ACDP MP and spokesperson on social development.

“The ACDP wants to commend the efforts, by the public, to put pressure on government to implement measures to address abuse in the country.”

“It makes no logical sense for government to spend tax-payers money to mobilise the public. It makes more sense for government put the resources into solutions and not celebrations under the guise of activism”

“Yes, criminal activity must be stopped and dealt with…, but this is government’s responsibility”

More that 500 thousand women and children in South Africa have been raped in the past 10 years and less that 8 percent of reported rapes result in conviction.

“We need more courts and personnel to deal specifically with these issues. We need better training for police, better forensic services, paedophile registers, crèches, care centres and amendments to destructive laws.”

“More ribbons…more hot air…more tax payers’ and NGO time and money spent on government-initiated-charades, must stop…and good old fashioned action must begin.”
