Domestic Violence

The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) appeals to the courts to deal appropriately with Domestic Violence. This comes during the “16 days of activism” campaign which started last week.

ACDP MP and Spokesperson on Social Development, Cheryllyn Dudley, made the statement during her recent visit to her constituency in the Eastern Cape. There, she visited centres for victims of Domestic Violence.

Bridgette Mashope is one of the many victims of domestic violence. It was recently reported that she’d been beaten by her boyfriend and is currently laying a coma. The alleged perpetrator is out on bail.

“As Bridgette fights for her life, the courts will have another opportunity to set a precedent in terms of how tolerant South Africans are when it comes to Domestic Violence.”

“The ACDP calls on the courts to deal appropriately with this serious problem plaguing South Africa.”

“Until clear statements and action emerge through the court judgements and appropriate penalties are set aside for perpetrators, Domestic Violence will continue unabated and perpetrators will have no incentive to get the help they need.”

“Despite, the laws in South Africa, many families still live in terror because the reality is that, until our police officers are given the specialised training needed to handle these dilemmas, turning to the law for protection remains more of a risk than a help for victims.”

“I further encourage and commend organisations in the Eastern Cape for their selfless commitment to helping <p>
women escape abusive relationships and lifestyles by providing them with alternatives and positive options.”

“One organisation in East London “living waters” in particular has distinguished itself as a shining example of what ordinary South Africa women can do when they set their hearts and minds to make a difference.”

“They are helping to empower abused women through employment programmes, where the profits from initiatives are divided amongst the women involved. These initiatives are proving to be tremendously successful.”
