ACDP agrees with Tutu

Selby Khumalo MP

The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) agrees with Archbishop Desmond Tutu's recent comments that improving facilities for deprived communities is a better way forward for sports.

"The ACDP has never supported quotas and further agrees with Archbishop Tutu that "tokenism is an insult to everyone"." said Selby Khumalo, ACDP MP and spokesman on sport and recreation.

"We need to look at what has been done since the unification of sports in 1992. There have been failures and shortcomings during this time. More than ten years have passed and sport in the country is still not non-racial."

"It was reported, today, that the Parliament's Sport Chairperson, Butana Komphela, said that "Tutu's views were treasonous".

"Butana Komphela was too harsh when he accused Tutu of treason." said Selby Khumalo.

"We should welcome comments from all sectors and we shouldn't lambaste opposing views. Rather we should encourage contribution to the debate in order to achieve a non-racial environment in sport."

"The focus of non-racialism should not just cover sport codes, like rugby and cricket, which have been at the forefront of this debate. It should cover all sport in the country."
