Student violence

“Student violence which has erupted and threatens to erupt on University Campuses must be dealt with decisively.” said Cheryllyn Dudley, ACDP MP and Spokesperson on Education.

“The ACDP shares student concerns that University fees place higher education out of reach for many and we must find solutions which will enable greater access to tertiary education.”

“The budget speech today indicated that student financial assistance has been taken into consideration in the budget and the ACDP calls on government to ensure that it is urgently used to address these concerns.”

“Bursaries which will assist in ensuring government departments benefit from the skills of assisted students will increase service delivery and directly benefit the public at large.”

“Violent and destruction behavior however cannot be condoned or tolerated and a clear message must go out that resorting to violence and destruction of property will evoke the full force of the law.”

Cheryllyn Dudley said: ”It is also encouraging to note that the Minister of Finance stressed the importance of increased spending on Education and has recognized the urgent need to invest in teachers salaries.”
