SABC resignations cause for concern

Selby Khumalo, MP

The recent resignation of the Heads of SABC Radio news and TV news, Pippa Green and Jimi Matthews, are a cause of great concern to the ACDP.

For a long time, the SABC’s role as a public broadcaster has been questioned because of its apparent pro-government stance.

The duty of a public broadcaster is to assist the institutions of democracy in a fair, non-partisan and unbiased manner.

Although we respect the need for career development, we are concerned at the possibility that these posts may be filled by individuals who may be placed only to further a pro-government agenda.

We must fight to ensure that the public broadcaster reflects the interest of the public or else it risks becoming a state broadcaster as we have witnessed in other countries.

The spirit of objectivity and not subjectivity must reign.
