Reduce MP seats, not pay rise!
Mighty Madasa MP

The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) has called for a debate in Parliament on whether the size of the National Assembly should be reduced. This comes after President Thabo Mbeki decided that the salary increase of his cabinet and MP’s should be six percent, and not seven.

ACDP MP Mighty Madasa moved a motion for debate in Parliament, earlier this week.

“Reducing the number of seats will reduce the cost and ensure that the house works effectively. The reduction of size will also improve the quality of the debates in the house- when it’s smaller, parties will hopefully appoint their best MPs.” said ACDP’s Mighty Madasa MP.

“In light of the recent pay increases for MPs and the cabinet, we should debate whether the seats of the National Assembly should be reduced - maybe by one hundred.” said Mighty Madasa.

“Government says that it doesn’t have money to give more than 6 percent increase. But, if there were fewer seats in the National Assembly, the incumbents (MPs) would get a slightly better increase.”
