Written Notice of Motion handed in today by African Christian Democratic Party MP, Adv Mighty Madasa:

That the House:

Notes that a Sasolburg businessman was convicted of culpable homicide for assaulting an employee and dragging him behind his bakkie for more than 5 km, has been sentenced to seven years in prison.
Notes that the Bloemfontein judge has granted leave to appeal against the sentence and that the accused Mr Odendaal is out on bail pending appeal;
Notes that in considering sentence the judge took into account in favour of the accused that “something serious” must have happened, though no evidence was led as to what the serious thing was to make Odendaal to explode into fury;
Expresses shock that the accused was convicted of culpable homicide instead of murder;
Calls upon the Ministry of Justice to investigate the case to see if the judgement was fair and not bias in favour of the accused in total disregard of the victim’s family loss.
