ACDP Notice of Motion - Sex Tourism
Rhoda Southgate MP ACDP
Wednesday, 17 October 2001
In the National Assembly today, Rhoda Southgate, MP for the African Christian Democratic Party gave the following Notice of Motion:
I will move on behalf of the ACDP:
That the house:
With great concern notes the irresponsible action by the ANC government to
withdraw from the Sex Tourism Myth or Realty? conference that is currently underway in Cape Town, where they are discussing how government can address and redress legislation in relation to the protection of our children facing this industry.
ACDP notes with alarm that children and women in South Africa have become part of the traffickers human contraband.
a) That children as young as 13 years old are kidnapped by gangsters, held captive and used for sex trade.
b) That women and children are trafficked from overseas in South East Asia, Eastern Europe and other countries in Africa to work as sex slaves in South Africa.
Calls on government to apologize to the organizers and organizations present at
this conference and set a date where a conference of this nature can be addressed
and not only pay lip service on certain occasions during the year to be seen to be
the protectors and listeners of the plight of our children, when in fact they are not.
Calls on government to be more vigilant, observant and put stringent checks on borders, airports and other access points into South Africa where paedophiles visit our country and where traffickers are transporting children in and out of our borders, and for government to take decisive action against agencies that use misleading advert to lure women and children from rural to urban areas and are forced to work as sex slaves.
