Kent Durr, MP (NCOP) – ACDP

Tuesday, 17 September 2002

Kent Durr MP for the African Christian Democratic Party gave the following Motion without Notice in the National Council of Provinces today:

The House notes the disturbing number of shipwrecks occurring along our coastline over the last number of months; deplores the environmental damages these wrecks cause to our pristine coastlines and further expresses our disquiet at the threatened destruction of the St Lucia wetland and marine life.

The House wishes to express its deep disturbance that certain endangered species in the area are threatened.

The House further asks how it is possible that a high risk ship can be allowed traverse so close inshore; calls upon our authorities to ensure the maximum protection and safety of our beaches and wildlife being threatened during the clean up period.

Calls upon the government to investigate any negligence in this regard.

Further calls upon the government to do an investigation on the causes of these accidents and to take the necessary preventative actions.

Thanks the Kwazulu Natal Parks Board and government for the efforts to date in dealing with the present crisis.
