ACDP Calls for the Monitoring of Student Political Organisations

African Christian Democratic Party MP, Advocate Mighty Madasa, handed in the following written Notice of Motion:


That the House:

Notes that there are political parties which have student bodies affiliated with them operating at educational institutions;
Notes that these student political organisations are regularly fighting for control and domination of student bodies, such as the SRC;
Notes that these student organisations are largely undisciplined, unruly, have promoted an environment of political intolerance and have caused anarchy in some institutions such as for example Butterworth Technikon;
Notes that as a result of a fighting between SASCO and Pasma, a SASCO
member who is a 26 year old B Proc student at Fort Hare University was shot dead at Butterworth Technikon;
Notes that a member of Pasma has handed himself to the police and has surrendered his gun following the death;
Doubts the efficacy of the existence of party political aligned student organisations in the post –1994 era;
Calls upon the affected political parties to ensure discipline in the said organisations to ensure peace and security at educational institutions;
Calls upon the Minister of Education to monitor these student organisation and ban them if they continue to be the cause of violence, property destruction, and death and schooling disruptions.
