Kent Durr African Christian Democratic Party MP and member of the National Council of Provinces gave the following Motion in Parliament yesterday:
The House notes the Machakos Protocol signed in July between the government of the Republic of Sudan and the Sudan Peoples Liberation Army/Sudan Peoples Liberation Movement; in an attempt to end the civil war between the Muslim north and the Christian and animist South Sudan, which has been raging for over 20 years with over 1 million people killed or maimed.
The House calls upon the South African government to help and encourage the warring parties in Sudan to adhere to the agreement and to the process to peace, human rights and constitutional government that the agreement spells out, including the right to self-determination for the people of South Sudan.
