Kevin Southgate MP for the African Christian Democratic Party in the Western Cape Legislature, and Chairman of the Steenberg Community Police Forum today strongly condemned the killing of a 39-year-old minibus taxi driver who was shot in Lavender Hill on the Cape Peninsula on Monday.

Mr Southgate said he understood the frustrations of the Taxi Association especially since suspects are arrested and back on the streets within 48 hours of their arrest.

Speaking at meeting in the Lavender Hill, Steenberg area today Mr Southgate, as the Community Police Forum Chairman for area called for calm and pleaded with the community not to take the law into their own hands. He further called for responsible action to be taken in order to ensure the safety of the children in the area, and criticised the ongoing disruptions in schooling hours, which is caused by the violence, as children were once again dismissed at 11am this morning.

He also said that a greater working relationship between the community and police was necessary to help bring an end to what he called, “senseless violence.”

In conclusion Mr Southgate thanked the police for the excellent work they are doing and long hours and effort that they are putting in to ensure that their community is safer and more secure.
