Thursday, 13 June 2002
During a Notice of Motion in Parliament yesterday African Christian Democratic MP Steve Swart called on the SA Government to heed the World Food Summits concerns over Zimbabwe, in particular food aid distribution:
That the House notes:
That Zimbabwean President, Robert Mugabe, has again been at the center of global attention at the United Nations World Food Summit in Rome, where he became the target of blistering criticism for his objectionable governance and land polices;
That he also came under fire for his governments food distribution patterns in which he is accused of feeding his supporters only not giving food aid to persons perceived to be members of the MDC; and consequently
Calls on the South African government to take heed of the concerns expressed at the World Food Summit, as well as similar concerns expressed by Danish Doctors for Human Rights, to ensure that there is no discrimination regarding the distribution of food aid in Zimbabwe, and
Expresses the heartfelt concern of this House regarding the severe hardships and suffering experienced by Zimbabweans at this time.
