Motion: SA must intervene in Zimbabwe
African Christian Democratic Party MP (NCOP) Kent Durr
28 May 2003
The House notes that inflation in Zimbabwe has soared to 269% and is expected to reach 500% by Christmas.
The effect inter alia is that a single onion now costs $250 Zimbabwe dollars and a single tomato or a cheap toilet roll $100 Zimbabwe dollars; making life impossible for starving pensioners in particular and the public generally.
Recent academic research shows that the Zimbabwe failure has had an over 1% negative impact on South Africa's economy, costing some 70 000 jobs here.
The House further notes that in the first 100 km's of the Limpopo and Mpumalanga Provnces of South Africa, Zimbabweans are now in the majority.
Before that country descends into complete chaos the House calls upon the South African government to make it obvious, loud and clear, that as a matter of urgency President Mugabe must step aside and allow properly supervised, fresh elections; leading to the re-construction of Zimbabwe.
