ACDP calls for Commission of Inquiry into SANDF dealings within the Arms Deal

Tuesday, 26 June 2001

Advocate Mighty Madasa MP (ACDP)

Adv Mighty Madasa MP and spokesman on Defence for the African Christian
Democratic Party in a statement today said that it was unlikely that the
Minister of Defence knew anything about SANDF Chief General Siphiwe
Nyanda receiving a massively discounted Mercedes Benz through the
European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company, a subcontracting company
involved in the Arms Deal.

However Adv Madasa said that an internal commission of inquiry should be
launched within the Defence Force to investigate the true nature of the
dealings between the Defence Force and the European Aeronautic Defence
and Space Company (EADS), with regards to the Arms Deal. EADS, a
company who will benefit from the arms deal through a joint venture from
two contracts worth more than R420 million, is the same company that
ordered the luxury 4x4 Mercedes Benz and C180 Mercedes Benz for Tony
Yengeni and his wife Lumka.

Adv Madasa called on the ANC to urge all of its members involved in the
Arms Deal to come forward with any information they may have concerning
this controversial issue, instead of waiting for the investigations to
be completed.
