The ACDP today congratulated Zimbabwe’s newly appointed ministers saying, “Our thoughts and prayers are with you and we wish you great success as you build together a great nation that will be a blessing far and wide”.

Among President Mnangagwa’s cabinet members is Minister of Youth, Sports, Art and Recreation, Kirsty Coventry, former swimmer and world record holder. The most decorated Olympian from Africa, Coventry retired from swimming after her fifth Olympics in 2016, having won the joint-most individual medals in women’s swimming in Olympic history. She is a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Chairperson of the IOC Athletes’ Commission, the body that represents all Olympic athletes worldwide.

ACDP MP Cheryllyn Dudley singled out Kirsty saying that, “The ACDP applauds Zimbabwe’s Kirsty Coventry on her appointment as Minister of Youth, Sports, Art and Recreation. As Zimbabwe’s, and indeed Africa’s ‘golden girl’, Kirsty brings unique gifts, experience and talents to the new Zimbabwe, not least of all dedication and an appetite for hard work. She is a role model and inspirational figure across Africa and the world of sport.”

Her memberships on the International Olympic Committee, World Anti-Doping Agency, International Surfing Federation and FINA have played a key part in expanding the global Olympic movement and the development of sport. Her non-profit organization, the Kirsty Coventry Academy provides coaching and swimming lessons with a program for low-income and under-served areas.

“We welcome you Kirsty - an exceptional woman - into the Parliaments of Africa - along with your fellow cabinet ministers we applaud you all - Makorokoto!”
